Horse Riding & Horse Care (without English Tuition)
Askham Bryan College, York - 14-17 year olds, boys and girls
This exciting, unique course is for the serious, competent horse rider and NOT a beginner. Our intensive riding and stable management course is set in the beautiful Yorkshire countryside, 2 hours by train from central London. You will be transferred from either Harrow or Rugby School after your English language course and start a week of intensive riding tuition and also learn about horse care. You will be allocated a horse for the week and will cover the following with your qualified tutors:
Riding under tuition:
- Dressage
- show jumping
- cross country (subject to ability)
Stable management:
Practicals
- Grooming, preparing of horses for competition, plaiting, foot care, saddlery
- Treating minor ailments, bandaging, signs of health and ill health
Theory
- Feeding
- Fitness
- Physiology
- Health
Relevant visits:
As long as you have a good basic level of experience we will match your ability to suitable horses and teachers. Early morning yards include routine stable duties, feeding and health care.
Please note we do ask for a short questionnaire to be completed before accepting your application and also a recent short video clip of you riding. This is to ensure that we match you with the correct horses for your level of riding ability. We would expect you to bring your own riding boots, jodhpurs, hat and body protector if you have one. Askham Bryan College is a registered BHS (British Horse Society) centre.
Students must have a spoken level of English that is Intermediate or higher – B2 on the Common European Framework, or a pass at Cambridge First Certificate to attend this course.
Accommodation
Students will be fully residential at the beautiful Askham Bryan College close to the beautiful and historic city of York. The college farm and estates covers over 413 hectares on two sites. All students will be in single room accommodation with an en-suite bathroom. There is a common room for time to relax together and evening activities will be a mix of a film evening, bowling, ghost walk in York, indoor climbing wall or various on site activities or sports. All meals (breakfast, lunch and supper) will be in the central dining hall.
